The team
The Manila Blazing Paddles (MBP) is Manila based Dragon Boat team and is an active member of the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation (PDBF), with members from all over Metro Manila and as far away as Bulacan and Cavite. We welcome men and women ages 18 and above for recreational and competitive paddling.
Our team competes in local, national and international dragon boat races. In addition to recruiting new members and training in preparation for these competitions, we promote the sport of dragon boating while bringing together people of diverse backgrounds to meet, to share experiences and to have fun. We challenge our members to do their best both in training for and competing in dragon boat races.
The team includes students, teachers, nurses, accountants, lawyers, entrepreneurs, call center agents and artists.
MBP is more than just a dragon boat team. We get together outside of practices and competitions for purely social gatherings like participating in fun runs, brunch, camping, parties, potlucks and movies. We are a family.
Our goals are as follows:
- To promote the sport of dragon boating in the Philippines and across the globe.
- To foster sportsmanship, discipline, healthy lifestyle, camaraderie, unity and solidarity.
- To enhance its members leadership potential and skills.
A Brief History
MBP was formed by eager, young members of PATTS Bodybuilding Club, who want to reach out to people from different walks of life, to promote a healthy lifestyle and to challenge themselves by engaging in the physically demanding and exhilarating sport of Dragon Boating.
MBP was born from the PATTS Adventure Team, an organization that has multiple branches that nurtures young body builders, down hill racers, wall climbing enthusiasts, PATTS Mountaineering, and Dragon Boat Rowing.
As it turned out, everyone started to focus more on Dragon Boating as they found this to be the most enjoyable, challenging and exhilarating among all the other sports.
In early September 2000, back when there were very few dragon boat teams, MBP was formed. The club was exclusively for students of PATTS College of Aeronautics. At that time, the team only did land training for a year. The team trained hard and the camaraderie between teammates was forged as challenges were met and conquered with the combined effort of the team working as a unit.
In February of 2001, the team formally began training on the boat at the basin of the Manila Bay Yacht Club. Around this time, PATTS Adventure Team opened its doors to non-PATTS College of Aeronautics students in order to reach out to more people. Hence, the team changed its name from PATTS Adventure Team to the “Manila Blazing Paddles”. And this is the story of how the MBP started.
